Getting Into the Groove Through Fitness

Fulfill your New Year's goal to get into shape for the year and grow your fitness journey through Wright State’s Fitness Groups. Wright State University’s campus recreation offers multiple fitness classes throughout the semester such as yoga, cycling, ballet, Latin dance and many more.

Variety of options

The group fitness classes run throughout both fall and spring semester, offered multiple days a week with a variety of times.

Each class is dependent on the instructors capabilities and availability. The instructors come from all areas of WSU’s campus, from undergraduate, graduate and master students, as well as faculty, staff and alumni.

Associate Director of Campus Recreation Billy Willis discussed instructors on-campus.

“We are always looking to bring on new instructors who have a passion for group exercise, fitness, and helping others reach their fitness goals,” Willis said.

Wright State Campus Recreation Center offers thirty classes and students have free access to all.

New fitness classes

This spring semester, the Recreation Center is offering three new classes such as ballet, latin dance and booty mix.

Ava Blundell is an undergraduate student at WSU who teaches the new ballet class that is offered this spring semester. Ava wanted to get involved on campus and teaching ballet was a great opportunity to do what she loves. Her class is a mix of proper ballet technique and a workout class.

“I have done ballet since I was three. I taught throughout high school at my studio and I really enjoyed it, so the Rec Center's fitness classes were the perfect opportunity to continue what I love,” Blundell stated.

Through her class, you learn different ballet steps such as leaps, turns and balances.

Ballet is being offered every week on Mondays at 3 p.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesdays 6:15 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. and Thursday 8:30 p.m. to 9:15 p.m. The classes are in studios C and B at the fitness center in the Student Union.

Booty Mix is a new addition to the Wright State's Recreation Center fitness groups. It is a class that helps heal through the power of booty shaking.

During this class, participants will learn to meditate in a state called flow. When this meditative state is paired with music, it helps to melt away the difficulty of the task at hand.

Mikaela Sobolik is a WSU alumni who teaches the class booty mix. She got into booty mix after taking classes through her local gym and found that the class was fun and exhilarating.

“Booty Mix stands out from other workout classes in that it is for anyone and does not discriminate,” Sobolik stated. “We meet anyone wherever they are in their fitness journey without judgement, and strive to improve overall mental and physical health.”

Booty mix is being offered on Tuesdays at 4:30 p.m. weekly in studio C of the Student Union Recreation Center.
