The Wright State University women’s basketball defended the Nutter Center once again while hosting Youngstown University. The Raiders have been working hard and consecutively throughout the season, coming into Sunday with a 3-14 overall record and a 2-7 in Horizon League play.
First half
Starting the game, YSU took offense right away. Within two minutes of the first quarter, junior guard Makiya Miller put the first points on the board with her first three of the game.
Throughout the period, the Raiders were falling short against the Penguins, resulting in a 12-20 lead for YSU.
Coming out on the court during the second quarter, the Raiders were moving the ball efficiently and playing the game strategically.
The Raiders quickly caught up to the Penguins going back and forth between shots, ending the period with a 34-34 tie.
“I think that going into the second quarter we really just focused on leaning into doing the right things out on the court regardless of how the game was going right then and there,” Olivia Brown stated.
Finishing the game
The Raiders consistently shot 69.2% in the field throughout the third period. Within the first few minutes, WSU had a lead against YSU.
WSU continued to gain leeway skillfully throughout the quarter, going into the last period with a 58-49 lead.
The Raider team continued to push and work against the Penguins during the fourth quarter. The team worked together to move the ball in order to get points for WSU.
Fifth-year forward Amaya Staton was holding the paint down; Staton led the team with career best 7-blocks. In the process, she matched the program game-best of over 40 years, previously set by Christi Hill in 1982.
“I’m beyond blessed and grateful to be in the position I am with this amazing team and to even get to play a 5th year. I just want to enjoy the ride, play the rest to my fullest ability, and finish the right way,” Staton mentioned. “This season is bigger than me.”
Freshman guard Abbie Riddle achieved a new career best 11 points, going four-of-five from the floor and two-of-two behind the arc.
“The confidence that my team and coaching staff pours in me to first take these shots and to make them have really helped me to improve my own confidence,” Riddle said.
The Raiders held strong finishing the game with a 77-62 victory against the Penguins. Holding a 4-14 overall record and a 2-6 in Horizon League play.
