In early January, Rylee Sagester, a freshman guard on the Wright State Women's basketball team, earned Horizon League freshman of the week. She was the first raider of the season to receive a Horizon League honors.

Sagester is a redshirt freshman from Tri-Village High School, where she was a four year starter. She totaled 2,001 points and broke an OHSAA record with 401 career 3-pointers. Sagester started her basketball career in the second grade. Her dad coached her throughout her early childhood, and she attributes her desire to play to the bond her and her dad formed around the sport.
She wanted to further her basketball career at Wright State University due to the positive atmosphere. Her teammates encourage her and each other to strive for their best.
"I feel like everyone really celebrated everyone's successes," Sagester said. "Everyone wanted everyone to succeed."
Being mentioned in the HL weekly, Sagester was feeling that her hard work was paying off. Sagester played in the game against Detroit Mercy and scored fifteen points within this game alone. Between both Youngstown State University and Detroit Mercy University, Sagester shot 53.8 percent from the floor and 62.5 percent from the three, averaging ten points.
"I think as a shooter, you just have to keep shooting, cause you just know you put in the work to make the next few," Sagester stated.
Outside of basketball, Sagester is pursuing a communications degree at WSU.
Teamwork
Sagester has been working with the team for the last year to better her game on the court. Sagester has been a great support on the court, and her teammates and coach have seen her endless hours paying off on the court. Kari Hoffman, Head Women's Basketball Coach, made a comment on her skills.
"She has a high IQ with the basketball and how to set her teammates up for success," Hoffman said.
Outside of the court, Sagester carries a positive attitude and is very encouraging towards her teammates, and overall a support for her teammates. On the court, Sagester helps the team balance their strengths and weaknesses when on the court, she puts her best foot forward when playing.
Ellie Magestro-Kennedy is a freshman on the team, she has been working with Sagester for the last year. Countless hours in the gym together and on the court, learning to work together and feed of off of each others successes.
"I love to play with her, she's always ready to shoot it and she's so easy to find and you know when to pass it to her," Magestro-Kennedy stated.
