Alpha Xi Delta, one of the many sororities at Wright State University, hosted an event to paint vinyls for $5 to raise money to support their upcoming Roller Disco Night. The sororities' major event will take place on Friday, April 4, and is in support of For the Love of Children.
About the event
The Roller Disco Night is an event Alpha Xi Delta has put on for many years in collaboration with FLOC. Leading up to the main event, the sorority hosts several other smaller events to get students informed and excited.
In addition to their vinyl painting event, they are also hosting a game night and a sunglass decorating event this week, as well as general tabling to spread the word.
The sorority was able to reuse lots of materials from previous years and events to supply their current events. Also, many organizations reached out and donated for the Roller Disco. Since the organization has done this event for so many years, they tend to have a good turnout.
What is FLOC?
For the Love of Children, or FLOC, is a non-profit, volunteer-run organization with the purpose of supporting kids and teens, especially in the foster care system.
“The mission is to serve over 6,000 children in the greater Dayton area who are neglected, abused, in foster care or who are in need of community resources,” the FLOC website reads.
The organization has over 12 different programs for kids, depending on what kind of help they need. These range from having little “boutiques” for kids to get cheap prom dresses to money classes intended to teach teens about financial basics, helping set them up for adulthood.
Zoe Sundermann, a nursing student at WSU, is a member of Alpha Xi Delta and she put the vinyl painting event together. She shared why partnering with FLOC has been a big part of her sorority.
“FLOC is sort of like the center hub for kids in need, or kids who are looking for a community to be a part of. Our sorority’s main outreach program, Kindly Hearts, is centered around helping kids and teens in the system, so that’s why we’ve partnered with them for so long,” Sundermann said.
All of the proceeds from the vinyl painting, as well as events later this week, including a game night and sunglasses decorating, will go directly to supporting FLOC. The Roller Disco Night is Alpha Xi Delta's largest fundraising event for FLOC.
Roller Disco Night
This year, their biggest event will take place on Friday, April 4 from 10 p.m. to Saturday, April 5 at 1 a.m. The event will be hosted at the Orbit Fun Center in Dayton.
This fundraiser is a great opportunity for students and members of Dayton to give back to their area and support the kids directly in their community. This is because FLOC is a local company that operates out of Dayton.
Tickets will be $17 at the door, but if you buy them ahead of time, they are $12. Members of Alpha Xi Delta will be tabling around campus this week to sell tickets and provide details about the event and the fundraiser.
Although this event is put on by only one sorority, there is lots of support from members of other organizations. Alison Phillips, a member of Alpha Xi Delta, shared why this event means so much to her.
“I love getting to spend time with all my sisters, but people from so many other sororities and fraternities come out and donate and it’s a great time to have all of Greek life together to have fun and to support the kids,” Phillips said.
If you are looking for something to do this weekend, stop by the Orbit Fun Center to have some disco fun with other WSU students and donate money to support the kids and teens of FLOC!
