Campus Couture: thrifting tips

km2“I think of myself sometimes as an old soul.”

Kyle Mercuri stands in an H&M sheer sweater over top a white button down. He also wears black pants from American Apparel and Steve Madden boots from DSW.

“I don’t think I’ve ever met someone like myself.  I’m very quirky, I’m loud, and I’m very outspoken,” Mercuri says, unwrapping his scarf from around his neck.

He holds up his oversized army jacket from Forever 21 Men. “I got it in an XL.  I’m a little more petite so I can get away with that.  It looks interesting since it’s so long.”

Mercuri describes his style as quirky, vintage-inspired, and androgynous.km1

“I feel like a lot of what I wear isn’t specifically for a man, because a woman could also wear the same basic silhouette,” Mercuri says.

Mercuri is a French major at Wright State.  He also enjoys thrifting at local second hand shops.

“I love Valley Thrift since it’s really close to Wright State. I can always make a Valley Thrift trip,” Mercuri says. “When I go thrifting, I look for things that are non-descript like a white button down or something that isn’t over patterned.”

Mercuri explains that it’s best to find basics at thrift stores instead of paying $15 for a v-neck somewhere else.

“When you buy it [the basic clothing piece] you can pair it with something you did buy that’s a little more expensive at a store.  Finding basic things at a thrift store is really important.”
