Campus Couture: Ugly Christmas sweaters

“I’ma take your grandpa’s style, I’ma take your grandpa’s style, No for real -ask your grandpa- can I have his hand-me-downs?”

I couldn’t have said it better than Macklemore when expressing our society’s new wardrobe obsession with vintage, hand-me-down clothing. Since we’ve started to notice style regress to older fashions it isn’t surprising that the sweaters Bill Cosby was sporting in his hit comedy series The Cosby Show are coming back to life once again. For those who have seen the 1989 film National Lampoons Christmas Vacation, they know that Chevy Chase was also an advocate for our new holiday wardrobe obsession.

Ugly Christmas sweaters.

It’s become such a trend that it’s now appropriate to wear them to all Christmas events or even just going to hang out with your friends. Maybe it’s an icebreaker or just a way to lighten the mood during our holiday season but either way it’s making people smile and laugh at the holiday enthusiasm and cheer.

“I like them.” says WSU student Sarah Clark. “Christmas is about being funny, goofy and just enjoying the holidays, so why not?” Ugly Christmas sweaters are brightening the holidays with each little light bulb, jingle bell, and ugly Christmas patch attached. If you’re in the market this season, just listen to the rest of Macklemore’s lyrics then check out your nearest thrift store.
