For those seeking to improve their game in the professional world, Career Services plans to host workshops about connecting with employers at career fairs Sept. 9 and 10.
The workshops will be held on Monday, Sept. 9 from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. and Tuesday, Sept. 10 from 2:00 to 3:00 in the Rathskellar Room in the Student Union.
“We’ve been doing [this workshop] for the past 14 years, bringing employers in and talking about what they’re looking for at the event. If,” said Associate Director of Career Services Charlene Walker. “If we can do it for one group, why not do it for other groups?”
Each workshop is one hour long. The first half hour will consist of a presentation from the Career Services staff covering a range of topics such as creating an “elevator pitch,” how to network, how to shake hands and professional dress. The second half of each workshop will consist of an employer panel to give insight into the other side of career fairs.
“We did [this workshop] for the first time for this group last spring,” said Walker.
“I thought it was pretty helpful to hear from different employers what exactly they want,” said computer engineering major Dean Hamilton who attended a similar workshop last spring.
However, some other students thought the information was repetitive.
“Maybe it’s because I’ve heard a lot of it in class,” business major Elizabeth Thomson said, “but most of the things they told us weren’t new to me.”
“Career development is a process,” said Walker. “It’s developing your professional image, your reputation. Visit early and visit often to Career Services. We are the one office that keeps on giving after graduation.”
