The Apollo Room in the Student Union will transform as it hosts the Lunar New Year Celebration.
The Lunar New Year Celebration is free, and will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 5.
With an acrobatic performance from two members of the Chinese National Acrobats Troupe, Nan Zhang and Zixuan Xie, this cultural exposure to the Chinese New Year has entertainment for all.
As world-renowned acrobats, the performance of Zhang and Xie is sure to be an astonishing display. From hula hooping 25 hoops at once to juggling seven balls while performing a ballet-like dance, the troupe’s acts have made them renowned in the acrobat community. Preview their show on YouTube.
The Lunar New Year Celebration will offer other events such as fortune telling, calligraphy and various Chinese and Vietnamese traditional activities.
“The audience will learn about the meaning of Chinese New Year and Vietnamese New Year, Tet, while participating in fun and enlightening hands-on cultural activities,” Mai Nguyen, the Director of Wright State’s Asian/Hispanic/Native American Center, said. “This is a great event to explore cultures half way around the world without leaving Dayton.”
The event will also bring the Kitchen God Report to the event with the help of students.
The image of the Kitchen God, or “Stove Master,” is seen as an important domestic deity in Chinese and Vietnamese homes. Placed above the stove, which is considered the soul of the family, the Kitchen God travels to the Emperor of the Heavens every year during the Lunar New Year in order to report the behavior of the family. Based on this report, the Emperor of the Heavens either rewards or punishes the family.
At this event, students will read this past year’s Kitchen God Report.
