Centerville's production of Wright State golfers

Centerville High School has been a popular recruiting spot for Wright State’s golf program as there are currently four players from the school on the 2015-16 roster (nine members); Senior Conner Lash, juniors Austin Sipe and Ryan Wenzler and freshman Alec Velasco.

“Centerville has had a pretty good program,” Raiders head coach Pete Samborsky said.  “I don’t know if its something they were doing or if the talent around the area has gotten better.”

The four players found much success in Centerville while playing in the Greater Western Ohio Conference (GWOC).  Since 2006-7, Centerville has won the central conference every year in the GWOC, except for the 2013-14 season and won seven GWOC championships in that time.

The Elks have not lost a match in the central conference of the GWOC in the last 10 years, while players are graduating and transitioning that success to the college game.

“We always had a pretty strong team when I was there,” Wenzler said.  “We did well in high school and its cool to have half the team on the Wright State team.  It’s cool that we can transfer that success here.”

Through three seasons at WSU, Wenzler has six top-ten finishes with a first place finish at the Northern Kentucky Classic in Sept. 2016 while tying a course record with a 64 in the second round; 10 under par overall for the tournament.

Since arriving at Wright State in 2012-13, Lash has improved his average every year from a 78.77 to 75.27 with a low round of 70.

Sipe has also increased his average every season since being at WSU with a 79.74 in his freshman season compared to his 74.60 average this year, with a low round of 68 in the second round of the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational.

In his first season as a Raider, Velasco has played in three tournaments and has an average of 77.88 with a low round of 71 in the third round of the Murray State Invitational.

“A lot of guys on our team are really hard working,” Sipe said.  “They’re a great group of guys and we’re just trying to be a force in the Horizon League.”

The Raiders began their spring schedule in Sevierville, TN on Sunday, Mar. 20 at the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate with a fourth place tie (+1 over par), seven strokes behind the leaders, Murray State (-6 under par).
