As fall semester begins this week, athletics and recreation across Wright State University will also start their fall 2022 seasons. But, varsity athletics are not the only level of play WSU has to offer.
Both club sports and intramurals begin their individual leagues soon, offering WSU students an outlet of relaxation or opportunity to continue high school sports interests.
For Camryn Harrell, President of the Sports Club Council and the Dance Team, club sports are a perfect medium between the pressure of varsity sports and still being able to compete.
“The older you get, the more competitive it gets and the more overwhelmed you get, especially in college,” Harrell said. “But, the way that I’ve been involved on campus has been the best experience I could have made for myself here.”
Continuing to Compete
Whether because of high school seasons being canceled or affected due to COVID-19, or because of a desire to still play in college, club teams are open to all WSU students.
“I felt like I wasn't ready after my senior year of high school to give up volleyball. I was still wanting to play,” President of the Women’s Volleyball Club Kyndall Berner said. “I just kept going forward and I found out Wright State had a club volleyball team, so I decided to join.” While Intramural sports are quicker leagues that don’t require much commitment, club sports generally have weekly practices and play against other collegiate clubs around Ohio.
“I chose club over intramural sports because I wanted a more competitive atmosphere that was going to push me,” President of Men’s Club Soccer Evan Throckmorton said. “Club sports is all about pushing yourself and competing at the next level.”
Making connections
Even if students choose to pursue intramurals over club sports, campus recreation is a way to relieve stress, stay healthy and make new friends around WSU.
“I like being able to just go outside and run around and release all of my energy after sitting in a classroom all day. Getting to just go outside and do a bunch of nonsense with people is a good outlet,” President of Women’s Club Soccer Katelynn Johnson said.
Whether students are interested in intramurals or club competition, campus recreation has something to offer all WSU students this fall semester.
