On Sunday, April 7, the Fraternity and Sorority Council held a Greek Life Awards ceremony. Around one hundred people attended, all from various chapters in the Greek community. The hour-long awards ceremony was held at Wright State University.

This year, the awards were a more prestigious event. In past years, they have been combined with awards and an all-Greek formal event with about 10 awards. The Council decided they wanted to focus on the awards.

“So many members in the Greek community are well-known leaders on campus, not just in Greek Life but in other organizations,” said Sara Christy, president of the Greek Life Sorority and Fraternity Council. “So we really wanted to give them an opportunity to be honored and recognized for all their efforts.”

The numbers of awards increased to 25 and recognized anyone from emerging leaders, senior leaders or chapter presidents to specific programming that made an impact. Two awards were handed out to people outside of Greek Life who made an impact on the community.

“One of the recipients was Katie Deedrick, who really helped me out. In my first month of presidency, one of the girls in my chapter passed away, so she was able to give us counseling for the chapter and make sure she was able to receive her posthumous degree,” said Christy.

Awards were mainly given out to student leaders.

“The overall ceremony was a cocktail attire event. We had food from Chartwells and cupcakes from The Cakery. Basically, we had opening comments from our faculty advisor and myself, then we moved into the different award categories,” said Christy.

Chapter-related awards like Director of Diversity and Inclusion or the Greek Unity Award were handed out at the ceremony.

“We were able to recognize a chapter that made an impact by being able to have open conversations about diversity and inclusion and being able to make sure their members were being open-minded,” said Christy. “The Greek Unity Award was presented to two chapters, since they made efforts to collaborate amongst councils.”
