Latest Abrams installment worth the trek

“Star Trek: Into Darkness” has locked on and beamed up a thumbs up from me.

When it comes to the Star Trek mythos, I am a casual fan. I know the basics of Star Trek. I’ve seen bits and pieces of both the original series and the “Next Generation” series. I know of the basic characters like Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Picard, etc.

Can those that aren’t Trek fans still enjoy this film? The answer is yes. The film will answer any question anyone may have about the franchise and keep you engaged from scene one.

The movie is the second installment in J.J. Abram’s rebooted franchise, continuing the adventures of the star ship Enterprise and her crew. This time around the Enterprise must face a new foe that attacked a star fleet base for unknown reasons. The person in question is a Federation agent gone rogue named John Harrison (Benedict Cumberbatch) and the Enterprise goes after him not realizing that there is more at stake here.

Right off the bat I will that the best thing in this film is Benedict Cumberbatch as the villain. He can draw the audience in during any scene. There is so much to this character that I do not what to spoil it for you. Spoiling it would take out the fun out it.

But what about the rest of the cast? They’re also very good. Karl Urban is wonderful at playing the crusty and grumpy Doctor “Bones” McCoy, Simon Pegg is amazing as always playing Scotty the chief engineer and the rest are also very good.

One of the best aspects of the film is the focus on the character of Capt. Kirk (played again by Chris Pine) and how his ego can hurt the others. Throughout the film we see him going through guilt and realization that his actions have consequences.

Like any other film there are flaws, which in this film come in around the end. I can’t say that I hate it but I have mixed feelings about it. It’s not something that comes out of nowhere and surprises you, but after a really good scene that seems like the perfect spot to end it, the story just continues and feels a bit odd. It’s really hard to describe without ruining the ending.

Despite the mixed feelings about the ending and a few other nit picky problems I can honestly say that “Star Trek: Into Darkness” is worth the price of admission.
