Both Wright State University (WSU) Basketball teams ended their regular seasons as champions.

All of the All-League Honors

Wright State is headed into the postseason with the most All-Horizon League Honors this year, with eight raiders receiving honors for the 2020-21 season.

For the men’s side, Loudon Love, Tanner Holden, Grant Basile and Tim Finke all received honors from the Horizon League, with Love named the Horizon League Player of the Year for the second year in a row, and Holden being put on the All-League first team as a sophomore with 15.8 points per game on over 50% shooting.

For the women’s team, Head Coach Katrina Merriweather, Angel Baker, Tyler Frierson, and Emani Jefferson all earned themselves honors, with Merriweather being named Horizon League’s Coach of the Year for a third time, and Angel Baker placed on the All-League First Team with 17 points per league game.

Basile and Finke also earned awards for the men’s side, with Basile placed on the All-League second team after his amazing performances in the second half of the season, and Finke was placed on the All-Defensive team for his patient defense throughout the year.

For the women’s team, Frierson was placed on the All-League third team for her dominance in the paint throughout the year, and Emani Jefferson earned an All-Freshman team spot after starting for WSU for the season.

Starting in the quarterfinals

With both teams earning a high seed after the regular season, it is up to the play-in games to decide who their quarter final opponents will be.

The men’s teams will most likely be facing off against the Green Bay Phoenix, but could also face off against Milwaukee or IUPUI if the IPFW Mastodons upset Green Bay. All three are teams that WSU beat in both games during the regular season.

Green Bay’s Amari Davis earned second All-League team over the season, and scored 35 points on the raiders in one of their regular season games. Milwaukee’s Te’Jon Lucas and IUPUI’s Marcus Burk also received HL honors this season, and gave the Raiders some trouble during their matches.

The women’s team will most likely be facing off against the Robert Morris Colonials or the Northern Kentucky Norse for their quarterfinal match. The Raiders went 2-0 over the Norse, but the Raiders and Colonials have a mini-rivalry this season, going 2-2 over four games.

Lindsey Duvall and Ivy Turner have been the big players for the Norse this season, both earning HL honors. Sol Castro and Esther Castedo found their groove for the Colonials when playing the Raiders, scoring big points to bring their four matches to 2-2.

Both quarterfinal matches will take place on March 2, with the women’s game at 2 p.m., and the men’s game at 7 p.m.
