Wright State basketball teams compete in HL quarterfinals

The Wright State University women’s and men’s basketball teams competed in the Horizon League Championship quarterfinal games on Thursday, March 7. 

The women’s team defeated Milwaukee 70-60 at home in the Nutter Center. The Lady Raiders move on to play No. 1 Cleveland State in the semifinals on Monday, March 11.

The men’s team took on Northern Kentucky shortly after the women’s game, falling short 97-99 in overtime. The team finished the season with an overall record of 18-14.

Super Tuesday results, Haley suspends campaign

Tuesday, March 5, was “Super Tuesday” in the United States, the day when the greatest number of states hold primary elections for that particular election cycle. 

Primaries were in Alabama, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont and Virginia. 

Nikki Haley, a Republican candidate against former President Donald Trump, only won Vermont, leading to more speculation of a presidential election between President Joe Biden and Trump, according to the Associated Press. On Wednesday, March 6, Haley suspended her campaign. 

Biden delivers State of the Union

On Thursday, March 7, President Joe Biden used his State of the Union speech to address former President Trump and other Republicans ahead of the upcoming presidential elections, according to the Associated Press.
“My lifetime has taught me to embrace freedom and democracy. A future based on the core values that have defined America: honesty, decency, dignity, equality,” Biden said. “Now some other people my age see a different story: an American story of resentment, revenge and retribution. That’s not me.”

France enshrines abortion rights in constitution

On Monday, March 4, French lawmakers approved a bill to enshrine abortion rights in the nation’s constitution, according to the Associated Press. French President Emmanuel Macron proposed the change to prevent a similar rollback of abortion rights occuring in other countries, including the United States overturning of Roe v. Wade. 

France is now the only country to explicitly guarantee abortion as a constitutional right. 

Sweden joins NATO

On Thursday, March 7, Sweden joined the North Atlantic Treaty Organization—a political and military alliance aimed at reaching cooperation on international defense and security-related issues—becoming the 32nd member of the organization, according to the Associated Press

Sweden has taken a stance of neutrality in international affairs since the end of World War II, but Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson described concerns of Russian aggression as the inciting factor to join NATO.
