Raiders win three straight

The Raiders (11-4) hosted and defeated Morehead State 3-1 Tuesday night in McLin Gym for their final non-conference game before Horizon League Conference play begins.

WSU got off to a quick start in the first set as they gained a 14-7 advantage after a kill by sophomore Katie Klusman. Morehead would respond with an 11-4 run that would motivate them to take the first set 25-23.

The second set was a tight one as there were seven ties and five lead changes. Both teams battled but WSU bounced back with a 25-20 victory to tie the score at 1-1.

After the break the Raiders came out in the third set with a 12-5 advantage after a service ace by senior Marissa Aiello. Morehead would battle back shrinking the deficit to three multiple times but could not catch up to the striking Raiders. WSU won the set 25-20.

Morehead got off to an 8-4 lead in the fourth set that caused WSU to take a timeout to regroup. They did just that as they scored four straight points to tie the game at eight. The rest of the set was tight as it went down to the wire with a 24-24 score for Morehead’s last life. WSU posted two straight points after an attack error then a kill by Klusman to win the round 26-24.

The Raiders posted a .253 hitting percentage in the game with 14 blocks and 52 set assists. Klusman led the team with 18 kills followed by sophomore Megan Hopkins with 12. Sophomore Maddie Lohmeier posted 44 assists and sophomore Jessie Thornton recorded 18 digs.
