Chris Collins has been broadcasting at WSU for the past 21 years. He’s been court-side for some of WSU’s most memorable moments, including their 1999 upset over Michigan State. Through the years he has called hundreds of games and seen the best players to come through WSU. He has been and truly is the voice of the Raiders.

 

How did you get started with WSU?

“1997 was the first time I did Wright State basketball games. However in the previous two years Time Warner was carrying a few of the games and it was a women’s basketball game. I was asked to do it because the individual who usually did it couldn’t make it. Well during halftime Mike Cusack, the athletic director at the time, came over at halftime and worked with me. Long story short they had some changes the next year and they asked me if I would be interested."

What is your favorite WSU basketball memory?

“The 2007 Horizon League tournament was really great,” he said. “We tied with Butler for the regular season title, but we held the tiebreaker so the tournament was at the Nutter Center. WSU had a decent rivalry at the time, so when we got to face them in the championship game it was just so exciting. DaShaun Wood carried that team throughout the year and into the tournament as well. They ended up beating Butler 60-55 and getting to go to the NCAA tournament. Another one that I call a 1A is the upset of Michigan State in 1999."

 

Was there a game that stood out that may not be as memorable as the MSU game or the 2007 Horizon League championship game?

“I remember a game that I believe was in 2001 where WSU went to Butler and got a triple overtime victory. It was one of the most exciting games I’ve ever called because Butler was just beginning to become a very competitive program, and this was a start to what would become a decent rivalry between Butler and WSU. The stadium was just packed and both of us were towards the top of the standings. Butler just didn’t lose at home all that often, so leaving there with a win was just an exhilarating feeling for everyone."

 

Who do you think is WSU’s biggest rival?

“I think they’re developing one with NKU the past couple of seasons. But I also think that we had a rivalry with Butler before they left the conference. I think if you ask WSU fans they would say it was a rivalry, but Butler fans may not think so. But I also think Butler fans wouldn’t be honest in saying that. Both teams back then were successful programs and they were relatively close in terms of travel."

 

Who has been your favorite player to watch on the court since your time at WSU?

“We’ve had a lot of great players come through here, but for me pound for pound it was DaShaun Wood. Not only because he got better every year, but he had a fierce competitiveness. He hated to lose and he willed that 2007 team to get to the tournament that year. He made so many great plays in that game when they were down early. Also, he was an ironman. He only missed one game in his career. He was just a tremendous athlete and a fun player to watch."

 

What advice would you give to a young broadcaster who is just getting started in broadcasting?

“It’s a very difficult business to get into. You have to have great timing and as much experience as you can get. You have to make yourself available to every opportunity you get. Also, try and practice when you can. Call a game that’s on TV so you get more comfortable for when you get an opportunity. Once you get that opportunity, run with it, because you never know when positions are going to open in this profession."

Large hospitals across the country are working to start their own generic drug company after years of facing challenges of getting medications, according to a report by The New York Times.

“This is a shot across the bow of the bad guys,” said Dr. Marc Harrison, chief executive of Intermountain Healthcare, the nonprofit Salt Lake City hospital group that is spearheading the effort. “We are not going to lay down. We are going to go ahead and try and fix it,” he said in a Times article.

The Intermountain Healthcare has faced drug shortages or sudden price hikes on off patent products.

“If they all agree to buy enough to sustain this effort, you will have a huge threat to people that are trying to manipulate the generic drug market. They will want to think twice," said Dr. Kevin A. Schulman, professor of medicine at the Duke University School of Medicine in the article by the Times.

Dr. Schulman has studied the generic drug market and is advising the effort.

Currently, there are around 300 hospitals involved in the group to start the revolution in the drug business, with more hospitals expected to join.

Over the years, the drug industry capitalized on buying old off-patent drugs and then raising their prices, the most well known case being Martin Shkreli. In 2015, he raised the prices of an old drug known as Daraprim from $13.50 to $750 per tablet.

The creation of the new company would primarily sell to hospitals, but officials told the Times they may eventually expand to offer their products.

There are currently 220 hospitals in the state of Ohio; it is unknown if any of their networks will be involved in the group.

The best time management apps for college students

The Women's Center will host the third Scarf Frenzy event on Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2018 beginning at noon on the second floor of the Dunbar Library. The event is a collaboration by the Women's Center, the Library and the Knitting and Crocheting Circle service group.

"What we do is hang scarves and hats on the railings around the stairs, a couple of fake trees we hang things onto, and put many things around that area as we can. Then exactly at noon, I announce okay, please come and help yourself to whatever warm item you need," said Cindy Vanzant, assistant director at the Women's Center

Vanzant also mentioned that she has to encourage students to get up. “When some of the students see others trickling over there," they become interested in parusing the winter gear.

The two groups work on a variety of cold weather necessities such as afghans, blankets, sweaters and more which are donated to Michael's Carehouse, Greene County Children's Services, Hannah's Treasure Chest and other centers and organizations.

As of June 7, 2017, over 179 afghans, and 512 scarves have been made by the knitting group and donated to numerous individuals according to Vanzant.

Vanzant believes this event is a way to give back to the students.

"We wouldn't be here if it weren't for the students, and not only should we help them excel in academics and to be successful, it also important that the students are comfortable and able to attend class. We love the students and they make our day," she said.

"We are all in this together, and doing community service whether it's for your own community here at Wright State or out in the Miami Valley community – it's very important and something we can all contribute too," Vanzant said.

Movie review: “The Greatest Showman"

On July 30, Susan Edwards from Appalachian State will step in as the new provost for Wright State University.

Edwards succeeds Thomas Sudkamp who served as the university provost since 2015.

“I would like to thank the staff, faculty, and administration who worked tirelessly during this time for their commitment and support in helping achieve these goals. It has been and, until July, will continue to be an honor to serve the university as the Provost,” Sudkamp said in a WSU post.

Edwards was previously the vice provost for faculty affairs at the North Carolina based university who served in that position for the last three years. She was selected from an application pool of 50 candidates from a search that took place over the course of a four month search.

According to Wright State President Cheryl Schrader, Edwards received a unanimous vote.

“Dr. Edwards received unanimous support from our search committee, whose 14 members represented a cross section of the university, as well as community leaders,” Schrader said. “She also resonated personally with many of the faculty, staff, students, and community members who met with her during her visit to our campus. Those who interacted with her said they were impressed with her ability to listen closely, analyze questions quickly, and communicate clearly.”

Over the next couple of months Edwards will be making her transition into the Raider community as the provost. With this position she will also be the vice president of academic affairs at WSU.

“Her wide-ranging experience as a teacher, researcher, and administrator, her leadership skills, and her personal commitment to student success make her the perfect leader to join our university at this time,” Schrader said.

Edwards said she saw a lot of similar values in WSU as her Appalachian State school.

“I saw a lot of similarities to Wright State’s values as an institution and the values that I hold dear student-centered, student-oriented and a very dedicated faculty and staff. Then when I visited I realized the values are not just words, they’re actually part of the institution’s DNA. It was palpable,” Edwards said according to Dayton Business Journal.

Schrader said Edwards has a background that aligns with the Wright State.
“Her background also aligns well with the breadth of experiences we offer, from associate degrees to professional schools and doctorate programs to regional campuses, such as our Lake Campus. She has worked at a variety of institutions, including a world-class global research university and Appalachian State, which is committed to student success and student-centered research at both the undergraduate and graduate levels,” Schrader said.
