The Student Government Association (SGA) held its first meeting for the fall 2021 semester, making an amendment to the constitution and approving seven new appointments.

SGA works closely with the student body in hopes of increasing student involvement and communicating student interests within the decision-making process on campus.

Amendment and Appointments

Article V Section two of SGA’s constitution states that all members must ‘have attended Wright State University main campus for at least one (1) full academic term (one semester) prior to their election, selection, or appointment.’

The proposed amendment, with an attached sunset clause, will remove this requirement for one academic year, allowing new students to join SGA without attending for a full semester prior.

The senate voted on and approved the amendment unanimously.

Out of the seven new appointments, two nominees are freshman, members who would have previously not been eligible without the new legislation.

According to SGA President Jonathan Ciero, nominations and appointments are usually made at the end of the previous academic year, but did not happen last year due to the uncertainty of the pandemic.

At the meeting seven new appointments were made:

  • Victoria Solomon, Chief of Staff
  • Garrett Regan, Director of Internal Affairs
  • Diana Johnson, Director of External Affairs
  • George Baker, Policy Administrator
  • Jacob O’Connor, Director of Student Affairs
  • Kayla Roberts, Director of Inclusive Excellence and Accessibility
  • Markus Perry, Director of the SGA Internship Program

Upcoming Goals

Ciero said his two main goals for the upcoming year are increasing student involvement and continuing to focus on diversity and inclusion efforts.

“The way we go about doing that revolves around our House of representatives so that we can work with student organizations to help them,” Ciero said.

In respect to diversity and inclusion, Ciero said he wants to work with new Leadership such as Dr. Chaney, Vice President for Inclusive Excellence, to help implement ideas and gain new perspectives.

Vice President Sabrina D’Alesandro primarily focuses on the senate and wants to make sure each senator is more connected with their dean student advisory boards. In addition, she wants to work with both students and faculty to improve and foster that relationship.

Chief of Staff Victoria Solomon wants to focus on the students of WSU.

“The Student Government Association is meant to focus on the student body and we are here to support the student body,” Solomon said.
