Softball cruises by Marshall

Sophomore Macey Gunther drove in seven runs during game one of a two game series that Wright State took over Marshall at the WSU Softball field on Wednesday, April 6.

Wright State (20-15) has won 12 of their last 15 games and their last three, while they rank at the top of the Horizon League conference with a 5-1 record; tied with UIC.

The Raiders scored in every inning of the first game as they run-ruled the Thundering Herd 13-5 in five innings while senior Montana Wear collected her fifth win of the season.

WSU quickly took control of game one as junior Becka Peterson smashed her eighth homerun of the season in her first at-bat during the first inning.  Peterson later drove in a run in the third inning with a one-out single to center.

Gunther led off the second inning with a homerun, knocked in a run in the third with a single and then drove in two runs in the fourth inning with a double to left center field.  While she collected a hit in each of her at-bats (4-4), Gunther was a triple away from hitting a cycle as she drove in three more runs in the fifth inning on a double to right center field.

Senior Hanna Floyd reached base three times and drove in two runs with a single in the fourth inning and then walked for another RBI in the fifth.

The Raiders carried their success over from game one into the first inning of game two as they got out to a 4-0 lead that would ultimately be enough to win the game. Floyd drove in a run with a one-out single and then scored on a 2 RBI single by junior Libby Pfeffer.

Though the Thundering Herd plated two runs in the second, freshman Ally Russell protected the Raiders lead as she threw a complete game for her sixth win of the season.

The Raiders will be back in action at the WSU Softball field on Friday, April 8 as they host Cleveland State (8-20; 1-2) for a double-header, then finalize the three-game series on Saturday.  First pitch will be at 2 p.m.
