Dish: Carnitas and Chorizo Tacos

This week, with all the soaking wet snow, I took a much needed south of the border vacation for lunch. Taco Loco on Burkhardt road serves up some delicious and authentic Mexican dishes that won’t rest heavy on your wallet. The small Mexican restaurant is open from 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. throughout the week and until 9:30 p.m. on the weekend.
When I got there, they served tortilla chips and three different types of salsas, a regular salsa, salsa verde, and the third, I believe, was a new experiment recipe, which had a sweet and spicy flavor profile. The tortilla chips were good; they had very little salt on them, which is my preference. However, I’ve had better chips at other restaurants. The salsas on the other hand were very delicious, especially the new recipe. They weren’t overly spicy and not too chunky, which, to me, proved to be pleasing to the palate.
When I looked at the menu, I noticed that there were two different types of Tacos: Tacos Locos and regular Tacos. I got the regular tacos, which according to the waitress, are more authentic. You have a variety of meats to choose from, including beef, pork, chicken, tripe, gizzards and more. I ordered two tacos with different meats; one Carnitas (braised pork) and one Chorizo (Mexican sausage).
This is where it gets good.
When I looked down at my basket and saw two tacos smiling up at me, with sprinkled cilantro and onions dotting the top and shredded pork and crumbled chorizo spilling out of their fluffy corn tortilla cradles, I knew I was going to have something delicious. It was simply put together, with a filling that consisted of only three ingredients and a lime wedge on the side, but it was more than enough to satisfy.
Out of the two, my favorite was the carnitas taco. In fact, it was so good, I ordered a second before I left. The pork was juicy, but not too juicy that it pours all over your hand while you’re eating it. No greasy sleeves after this meal. The chorizo taco wasn’t bad at all, but the carnitas stood out and took center-stage.
