UAB Spreads Holiday Cheer with Make-and-Take Cookie Jars

Wright State students were eager to create their own cookie jars courtesy of the University Activities Board.

Getting festive

On Thursday, Nov. 30, students seized the opportunity to get a jump start on their holiday baking as they filled glass jars with the dry ingredients necessary for making delicious chocolate chip cookies.

UAB’s Director of Campus Events, Emelee Porter, shared the inspiration behind the event.

“Everybody loves cookies, and it’s getting close to the holidays, and who doesn’t want some nice Christmas cookies right before break?” Porter said.

Porter also expressed that the turnout was much larger than UAB had originally anticipated.

Students had to wait as UAB members made a grocery run to pick up more ingredients, as UAB had quickly run out. The hosts apologized for the wait, but the students stayed patient and understanding of the delay. After all, the wait would be worthwhile.

“There’s nothing better than a warm chocolate chip cookie,” UAB President Lexi Ricker said.

Now that students have the dry ingredients needed to make their sweet treat, all they will need to add is an egg, butter and some vanilla to their cookie mix (and turn on a Christmas movie and make some hot cocoa as they bake). Ooey-gooey goodness will be ready in as soon as nine minutes.

Spring events

The UAB Director of Marketing, Ali Smith, provided some insight on the many events students can expect to take place next semester.

“We’re doing a lot more of these make-and-take events. We want to make things accessible for people on campus, so a bunch of free stuff. Everyone loves free stuff, so it’ll be nice. And then we have some bigger events, like April Craze and Winter Fest. That’s gonna be taking over the entire Student Union, which a lot of people come out and enjoy, so I'm excited for those two,” Smith said.

Ricker also explained a few of the new events that will take place, as UAB has been fleshing out some fresh ideas for the upcoming year.

“We’re doing a lot of movies. We’re having a Valentine’s Day “Pitch Perfect” type of thing that we want to do, or you can paint vinyls. There’s a lot of new things that we’re throwing. We want to do a make-your-own-pizza and watch “Ratatouille” night because National Pizza Day is the ninth of February, so we have a lot of cool ideas coming out,” Ricker said.
Students interested in participating in these events can visit UAB’s Engage page.
