Volleyball defeats NKU 3-0

Wright State’s Volleyball team halted their four-game skid, beating the Northern Kentucky Norse in three sets.

After beginning the season 11-4, the Raiders found a bit of trouble entering Horizon League play, dropping their last four matches.

“After the tough road swing, where we lost in five to Milwaukee and did not play well against Green Bay, we knew we had to come home and get ourselves back on track and feel good about what we’re trying to do,” head coach Susan Clements said.

Wright State (12-8, 1-4) was matched nearly point for point by NKU, before a barrage in the third set came to claim victory for the Raiders.

After facing an 11-7 deficit, the Raiders battled back to take the first set with a 25-21 advantage.

Drama built in the second set, as a complete back and forth between Wright State and NKU saw both team struggling to gain an edge on the other. In the end, the Raiders came out victorious in the set, taking it 27-25.

There was little to no drama in the third set though, as Wright State jumped out to a 16-8 lead before taking the set and the match 25-13.

Collectively, Wright State dominated NKU with a 46-31 Kill advantage, but it was sophomore Megan Hopkins who led the Raiders. Hopkins finished with 14 kills, 33 attacks three blocks and a .333 hit percentage.

“Megan’s been really steady. She’s such an offensive weapon and a big emotional leader for our team. We talk about that—she’s got to take a heavy load and did a great job tonight,” Clements said.

Katie Klusman helped pace the Raiders with 14 kills, followed by Marisa Aiello with seven. Aiello lead all players with five blocks.

“Klusman was great in the back row for us, defensively, so we had a lot of “team” effort out there,” Clements said.

Raiders Volleyball will take the court again Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. when they face Cleveland State in the McLin Gym.
