Wenzler takes first

Junior Ryan Wenzler shot seven under par in the second round of the Northern Kentucky Classic on Sept. 27.  His score of a 64 broke and set a new course record at Elks Run Golf Club in Batavia, Ohio.

“It feels great,” Wenzler said.  “I didn’t realize until I made my putt on 17 for birdie.  I was like, geez; I could be pretty close.”

Along with his record setting performance in round two, Wenzler led all participants with a low score of 203 for all three rounds after the classic continued on Monday, Sept. 28.  Wenzler shot a 70 in round one and a 69 in round three.

“I stuck to my routine and kept trying to make birdies,” Wenzler said.  “I played well.  I hit my wedges great and everything was coming together.”

Senior Cody Nickson also had a solid tournament taking third overall with a 71 in round one and a pair of 70’s in the final two rounds.

The Raiders would finish third overall in the classic behind Youngstown State and the champion Morehead State University.  WSU shot a total of 867 and finished eight strokes away from the lead.  They shot the lowest round of the tournament in round two with a score of 278.

Juniors Chris Rossi (227) and Austin Sipe (229) tied for 35th and 39th followed by senior Conner Lash (236) tied at 56.

The golf team will be back in action at the Cleveland State Invitational beginning on Monday, Oct. 5.
