Women's Tennis: Raiders defeat Oakland, fall to Ohio State

The Raider women’s tennis team fell to Detroit on Saturday 4-1, before they defeated Detroit on Sunday 5-2. On Sunday night Wright State lost to Ohio State 7-0.

With the Horizon League Tournament approaching, head coach Sean McCaffrey stressed that the match against Oakland was very important for the team.

“There are four teams fighting for one last spot [in the Horizon League tournament] and both of our teams are involved [Wright State and Oakland], really whoever wins today is looking at pretty much being in the tournament…” McCaffrey said.

The Raiders went on to defeat Oakland putting them in a good position for the Horizon League Tournament and also ranking them sixth in the conference.

When asked about the chance to play in the Horizon League Tournament, freshman Megan Brdicka said, “For sure, yeah, I’m so excited.”

Brdicka discussed how her and teammate Aby Madrigal defeated Oakland in doubles winning 8-0, and the strategy they used.

“Fight hard and move my feet,” said Brdicka “Staying solid on fundamentals, because if I start to over think it, I will start missing.”

McCaffrey goes on to discuss his thoughts about both the women’s and men’s tennis teams.

“There is a definite level of energy, the camaraderie that both teams have really lends itself to kids then wanting to run a little faster and dive for balls they normally wouldn’t get, when they have their team backing them up…Even though it’s an individual sport you have people wanting to run through a wall for each other” McCaffrey said.

The women’s team will host Milwaukee on Friday and Green Bay on Saturday at the South Regency Tennis Center.
