WWSU 106.9 FM, Wright State University’s radio station, hosted a 24-hour radio marathon for World College Radio Day on Friday, Oct. 7th, 2022.

WWSU and World College Radio Day

Last year, WWSU was one of 10 radio stations globally to be awarded the ‘Spirit of College Radio Award,’ meaning that WWSU was one of the top radio stations that participated in World College Radio Day in 2021, according to WWSU General Manager Dylan Collison.

“WWSU 106.9 FM is hosting a 24-hour college radio marathon in celebration of world college radio day, which is being held at over 600 radio stations worldwide,” Collison said.

The 24-hour broadcast team hosted many forms of entertainment and educational information, ranging from an interview with WSU President Susan Edwards to hours of music throughout the night.

Importance of the event

“The theme is voices for peace, so we try to provide entertainment, but also include some educational programming as well to try and build off that theme. We want to spread awareness that everyone, no matter where they live, should be free from war and conflict,” Collison said.

The station hosted Professor Liam Anderson to share views on the war in Ukraine with other international conflicts.

Some musical artists were also able to make radio debuts. Programming Director of WWSU Luke Wetzel explained this importance.

“College radio is a pretty important thing, it’s where a lot of people get their starts in music. A lot of big breaks come out of college radio stations,” Wetzel said.

Wetzel also mentioned that WWSU provides a platform for producers to scout students to pursue a possible career in radio.

Involvement and the future

Wetzel provided ways students can get involved even after the 24-hour marathon.

“They are welcome to stop by any time until nine p.m. tonight, they can call over the radio, which is less frequent. They can also reach out over social media,” Wetzel said.

The next major event WWSU is participating in is ‘Vinylthon,’ where the radio station will exclusively broadcast vinyl records, according to Wetzel.

“I would love to have more events like this. I think it was very fun and a big team bonding experience,” Izabella Schenck, marketing director at WWSU, said.
