With Ohio’s winter weather approaching, commuters may face some roadway conditions that may affect their daily drive.

It’s important to give your car a little “check-up” before traveling in circumstances that are less than desirable.

Checking your battery, tire tread, and breaks is a great start to making sure you’re ready to go. It’s also important to make sure all your fluids have been topped off so that everything will function to the best of its ability.

Besides having your car in top-notch condition, there are some seasonal essentials to carry with you. AAA recommends having an “Emergency Road Kit” to provide you with some temporary relief until you’re able to get some roadside assistance.

Here’s some things the kit should include:

* Abrasive material: Something like sand or cat litter will come in handy when you’re trying to gain traction after losing grip.

* Snow shovel: This will come in handy if you’ve gotten into a rut that isn’t easy to get out of. Snow removal will help you gain some wiggle room and traction.

* Jumper cables: Having someone to give you a jump when stranded is nice, however you can’t get a jump start without cables.

* Drinking water and non-perishable snacks: Who knows how long you’ll be waiting, nothing is worse than being stranded and hungry. Double whammy.

* Blankets and a change of clothes: If you’re in a predicament and your car isn’t running, it’s important to stay as dry and as warm as possible.

* Basic Tools: Duct tape, rope, flashlight, batteries, screwdriver, etc.

Having the basics can make finding a solution easier.

* First aid kit: It’s important to have the ability to provide some assistance, whether that be to yourself or those who are with you.

Allowing yourself a little extra time to get to and from campus this time of year is important for everyone’s safety.

Being prepared for the unexpected will pay off in the long run, so make sure to take winter weather conditions seriously. Safe travels!
