The Wright State women’s soccer team is looking to be competitive in Horizon League competition this season. After tough summer training and two-a-days, the Lady Raiders are ready to take on the 2023 season.

Background

Last season, the women’s team finished with a final record of 8-7-3 and were 5-2-3 in conference play. In the quarterfinals of the Horizon League tournament, WSU fell to Youngstown State by a final of 1-2.

On Aug. 17, the Raiders took on Arizona State before facing Grand Canyon University on Aug. 20. While the Raiders recorded a 0-4 loss in both games, the team saw positive signs of what is to come. In the Arizona State game, senior goalkeeper Kiera Sarka recorded five saves, and the team showed hints of strong chemistry.

This season

After a long and strenuous summer, the WSU women’s soccer team is feeling more connected than ever.

“From previous years, I’ve heard that this year the team has been a lot closer,” freshman attacking center midfielder Addy Canter said.

The new connections will help the team face tough competition and obstacles throughout the season. Hard work and teamwork were the main goals of summer training.

“It’s a grind nonstop,” Sarka said about the team’s preseason. “We are just trying to work our way to the top.”

Sarka went on to say that the team plays in an “underdog scenario,” commenting on the mindset of the Raiders.

Looking ahead

The women’s team is looking forward to facing off against Milwaukee on Oct. 8 at Engelmann Stadium. Another huge game for the Lady Raiders will be at home against Northern Kentucky on Oct. 25. Playing against NKU means a little bit more, according to three-year head coach Travis Sobers.

Canter explained that playing in front of larger crowds is much more fun and exciting. Sobers also expressed similar sentiments.

"We are going to play a fun, exciting brand. The more support we have and the more intimidating we can make Alumni Field, then the better it is for the players."

Coach Sobers

On Aug. 24, the Raiders beat Southern Indiana 2-1. On Aug. 27, Wright State and Central Michigan tied 0-0.
