Blast from the Past shares memories of WSU’s earlier days

The 2nd annual Wright State Blast from the Past will bring together alumni, faculty and staff from Wright State’s earlier days to share their memories.

According to Karin Nevius, PR Coordinator, Blast from the Past was created by Friends of the Libraries board member, Dr. Gary Barlow, a professor emeritus. It was also created in collaboration with the Wright State archive. Records Manager, Chris Wydman, and the Retirees Association have been collecting taped interviews of Wright State alumni, faculty and staff to add to the archive.

“It would be neat for current students to come and hear what has happened in a short period of time,” said Nevius.

Speakers will share stories of their experiences at Wright State. One story attendants will hear is how Meijer used to be a llama field. Afterwards the audience will have a chance to share their stories and ask questions. There will also be light refreshments at the end.

Some of the speakers go back to the beginning of Wright State’s sports programs. Jim Brown helped develop Wright State’s basketball program and was the coach for men’s basketball from 1970 to 1997. Cathy Pearson was one of the first students and cheerleaders.

Two married Classics professors will also speak. Dr. Cynthia King was hired in 1965 and Dr. William King was hired in 1964.

Wright State’s first classified employee will speak as well. Mary Jo Wiley was hired in 1962. The night will be moderated by Dr. Bill Rickert.

“They took a giant leap coming to Wright State,” said Nevius.

Last year there were between 60 and 70 people who attended.

There will be an Open House before Blast from the Past. It will be located in the Special Collections & Archives section on the 4th floor of the Dunbar Library. The Open House will be from 4:30 to 5:30pm. Students will learn about the Retirees Association’s oral history project.

Blast from the Past will take place on April 12 from 5:30 to 7pm on the 4th floor of the Dunbar Library. This event is free to the public. To register go to www.libraries.wright.edu/calendar/events or call (937) 775-2380.
