Updated: Meijer Mania will not be hosted this year

The Meijer grocery store located on Colonel Glenn Highway will not host their annual back to school event “Meijer Mania” this year.

Meijer Mania will be hosted at other locations across the Midwest including at a location near Bowling Green State University. The decision to not host the event was made by their corporate office in Michigan, according to their Community Partnership and Promotions Specialist.

There had been an agreement between the university and Meijer that is no longer continuing, resulting in the loss of the event according to their corporate office.

For the last ten years the location down the street from campus has hosted an event for Wright State students to buy last minute dorm or school supplies with games, giveaways and a DJ on site. The grocery chain is within walking distance of the campus.

According to Hanna Tuzzolino, Community Partnerships & Promotions Specialist for Meijer, this was a financial decision made by their headquarters.

“Our regional operations group determined they were not able to renew our broader sponsorship with the university this year,” said Tuzzolino. “This was simply a financial decision due to the limited available sponsorship dollars we have in that region and by no means a reflection on the University or the specific event. We try and support as many activities as possible in the communities where our stores are located, which sometimes requires us to change the events or organizations we sponsor.”

The sponsorship was part of an agreement once held between the Athletic Department and Meijer. This is currently being reviewed.
