Homefull helps those in need in simple and creative ways

Homefull’s goal is to end homelessness. They provide housing, education and advocacy for those who cannot afford a home.

According to Tara Purvis, coordinator for the Youth and Literacy Programs, there is an average of 857 people who are homeless every night in Montgomery County alone. Homefull aims to reduce this number.

“With how hard the recession hit Dayton, there was an increase in children and families being homeless,” said Purvis.

While homeless shelters are great for short term homelessness, they can only do so much. Most felons are not able to stay in a homeless shelter and most shelters are for men only or women and children only, so families are separated.

For Make a Difference Day, the UH 101-03 class collected toiletry, cleaning supplies, feminine products, laundry detergent, shower curtains, toilet paper, trash bags and other household goods to donate to Homefull. Homefull had recently built new apartment complexes for people to move into. They raised around $1500 in items and cash donations.

They also helped move the items into the new apartments. The apartments are one bedroom and fully furnished. The apartments even came with donated flat screen T.V.s. Homefull offers case management on site. The residents are not required to leave at any certain time, they stay until they are ready to leave.

“It’s a beautiful building,” said Purvis.

Homefull offers multiple services to those who are homeless. They have prevention services, which helps those who are in danger of becoming homeless. Prevention services includes: financial assistance and case management. Homefull offers housing relocation, which helps people find houses that fit their budget. They have supportive housing which helps those with disabilities, and transitional housing for homeless veterans who may stay for up to two years.

Students who are interested in helping may help with Homefull’s micro farm, which helps raises funds for Homefull. Students may also volunteer at Homefull.

Homefull is a housing service available to those in Montgomery County who are homless, in danger of becoming homeless or chronically homeless.
