On Sunday, April 21, students in the Troupe Club are showcasing a “‘Hunger Games’ Musical Parody” in the Creative Arts Center.

Background

Although the show is happening at Wright State University, it is not immediately through the school. Students can write and put on their own shows, and student Avery Barber wrote “‘The Hunger Games’ Musical Parody.” Barber started the script while still in high school, inspired after seeing an “IT” musical parody.

“I’ve always wanted to do something with ‘The Hunger Games,’” Barber said.

Hanna Baker, another WSU student, is directing the show. Baker is a double major in Theater and Mechanical Engineering. Baker continues to be involved in theater after multiple years, but this is Baker’s first time directing.

“I’m excited to see theater from every angle,” Baker said.

Preparation

Baker held auditions for the show from late November to early December, and the team has rehearsed since January.

Barber is very excited to see the show she wrote come to life on the stage. In addition to writing the show, Barber also stars in it, playing Effie Trinket and a Raider.

Barber enjoyed getting to spend so much time with the cast.

“My favorite part about this show is getting to be with everyone and hanging out outside of rehearsals. We’re like a family,” Barber said.

Dalys Tice, who plays Peeta Mellark, said he enjoys the show because it is something new that has not been done before.

Purpose

If students go see the “‘Hunger Games’ Musical Parody,” be ready for lots of laughs. Director Baker wants this show to hopefully make finals week a bit easier and to show people you do not have to be a Theater major to be in shows at WSU.

“It brings a new comedic light to a dystopian story,” Baker said.

The show will be in the Creative Arts Center in the Jubilee Directing Lab (Room 145) on Sunday, April 21, at 2 and 7:30 p.m.

“You are in for a treat, a show that’s once-in-a-lifetime,” Tice said.
