After coming inches from losing Saturday evening’s contest in regulation, Wright State’s Bryce Rockwell-Ashton headed in the golden goal in double overtime to give WSU a 2-1 victory over the Green Bay Phoenix.
The win broke a four-game losing streak for the Raiders and they are 2-3 in Horizon League play.
“I believe in these guys,” WSU head coach Bryan Davis said. “That was the work and effort we needed to win games.”
WSU played the majority of Saturday’s contest a man up after Green Bay midfielder Tauren Greenidge committed his second yellow card violation of the contest in the 41st minute. His ejection came from a collision with WSU goalkeeper Tyler Blackmer.
The Raiders’ winning goal came from Rockwell-Ashton’s in the 107th minute from a well-placed ball from Greg Marchand. Marchand’s service found Rockwell-Ashton at the top of the box and he headed the ball past Phoenix goalkeeper Dary DeWalt. 
Rockwell-Ashton took part in the Senior Night festivities despite being a redshirt junior. Saturday’s goal was his first since redshirting last year due to an injury.
“That was a big moment for me,” he said. “I haven’t scored all season, coming off a redshirt last year and it was great.”
Despite playing the entire second half with a man advantage, the Phoenix outplayed the Raiders in the period. The Horizon League’s leading goal scorer Sam Krenzien tallied his 10th of the season after heading in a cross past Blackmer.
The Phoenix nearly took the lead late in the second half as they had a shot go off the crossbar.
WSU had a 1-0 advantage in the 30th minute as Jacob Stovall’s throw-in found freshman Austin Seifert in the box. Seifert headed the ball past DeWalt for his first collegiate goal.
“He’s been coming on and coming on this season, I am very proud of him,” Davis said.
In the 35th minute, the benches nearly cleared during a skirmish as the teams were setting up for a corner kick. There was pushing and shoving around Blackmer’s net. No cards were handed despite the clock being stopped for several minutes.
“It got chippy at times,” Marchand said. “But our guys did a nice job of not getting sucked into that. I think we did a good job playing above that. We had some guys in the box earlier in the first half. After they got the red card, we realized that ref was more than willing to give out cards.”
The Raiders conclude their home schedule tonight against Cleveland State at 7 p.m.
