Music review: Aurora by Bea Miller

Bea Miller released her second full-length album titled Aurora on February 23, 2018. This album includes all nine songs from her three previously released “chapters” which were named after colors and correlated with a different mood/emotion, as well as five all new songs.

Not only is Miller’s method of release genius and innovative for a tough industry, but it is also easier on fans wallets. Buying three songs at a time three different times through a year is much easier for some of her younger fans to afford than a full 14 track album at once. Once the album was released, fans only had to pay an addition two to three dollars to receive the remaining five new songs

Including the chapters with the new songs made the album and entire story through a journey of falling in love, realizing it’s not what you thought, getting through the anger and then finally discovering self love.

Of the new songs, the track “Motherlove” is a song about not needing anyone else to please yourself. The lyric that resonates most with me is, “Don’t call me just because you have nobody else, you’re desperate and full of —-, boy I can tell, I’d rather lay in bed and motherlove myself.”

The title itself is a play on words which Miller later revealed on Twitter for a few confused fans. While the track is already explicit, she wanted to add something a little more clever into it, which ended up being the title. The song is definitely one you can play full-blast in your car and sing along to and get fired up.

The song titled “Outside” is an incredibly relatable track about wanting to stay in and spend time with yourself. A lyrics that totally sticks out to me is, “I don’t even like my friends tonight I must be out of my mind,” because it’s how a lot of people in this age range feel. We love our friends, but for those of us who aren’t “partiers”, sometimes we just want to chill at home and watch “That ‘70s Show”.

“Girlfriend” can be summed up in basically just two lines of the chorus, “I don’t wanna be your girlfriend, I just wanna play with your hair. When we get up in the morning, I’ll be better on my own, I swear.” This song is upbeat and chill at the same time, as well as probably very relatable to many college kids who aren’t looking for relationships, just connection.

The track titled “Bored” represents enjoying time with someone, but realizing it all happens the same way every time and getting tired of it. Again, like nearly every song on this album, it is an incredibly relatable situation for high school/college-aged individuals.

The final new track, “Crash&Burn” was dubbed by Miller as one of her favorites she’s ever written. It’s a song about finally finding someone who gets you and that you can see working out in the best ways. Miller’s smooth and raspy vocals carry this song perfectly with a catchy beat in the background.

Overall, Aurora is a work of art full of understandable topics and and incredible new range and side of vocals from Bea.
