Incoming students dined with Wright State President David Hopkins Friday afternoon at the annual President’s Cookout, held on North Lawn near the Student Union.
The cookout kicked off WSU’s annual First Weekend events with music and food – grill items, chips and cookies were provided free of charge to those who attended.
The event took place from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m.
Some students, like an incoming freshman Rachael Watts, were impressed with the welcome.
“The last two days have been totally stellar,” Watts said.
“Anywhere with free food is pretty sweet,” said Dakota Bullock, a freshman Business major.
Freshman David Grooms felt the event did not live up to expectation.
“It’s not as exciting as I thought it would be and there isn’t really that much going on that I’m interested in,” Grooms said.
Hopkins met with new students and greeted familiar faces.
“This is what higher education is all about,” Hopkins said. “I’ve already met students from Venezuela, from England and from Russia. It’s just a really awesome group of students.”
After the cookout, many freshmen began making their way to the Nutter Center for Freshman Convocation. This year, Freshman Convocation featured Rocsi Diaz, reporter for “Entertainment Tonight,” as its keynote speaker.
