On Thursday, April 11, the Residence Life and Housing office hosted an event to help students understand and build their resumes while providing Raising Cane’s free-of-charge.

Set up

Several Honors Hall Residential Assistants got together to set up this event. Prior to the start, the RAs talked to and messaged students to get the word out.

The RAs set up different stations in the Honors Plaza for the students to work through and build their resume skills. One RA, A.J. Allen, was very excited to put on this event.

“This can be another opportunity to learn outside the classroom,” Allen said.

The event

Having the event set up with free food and prizes made it more enticing for attendees. This was done to reach out to a larger number of students.

“Students are more likely to come here than an office,” Allen said.

Some of the workshops they had set up included an informational resume video, exercises to help build a resume and professionals available to help look the resumes over.

Each of these exercises also came with the opportunity to win a raffle.

The purpose

Everyone needs a resume for any job; however, most students do not know how to write one, and some do not have resumes at all. This was a perfect way to get students to take the first step to get one.

In addition to this event, there are lots of resources around the Wright State University campus, including Career Services, but most students do not know about them. Even if they do, it can be intimidating to ask for help.

Having a fun event like this makes resources more accessible to students, and the RAs in charge of the event made sure to tell students about this information, educating them through the fun.

“This event is fun and more accessible, and students can win some prizes,” Allen said.
