Student Government to host competition to rename Medical Sciences building, propose name to Board of Trustees

Completed in 1976, when the medical school admitted its first class, Medical Sciences was the home of the Wright State Medical School until White Hall was renovated and rededicated as the hub of the Boonshoft School of Medicine. New classrooms were added to the Medical Sciences building in 2009.
It now houses the Enrollment Management Division; the Wright State Human Resources department; the Center for Interventions, Treatment and Addictions Research; the Leukocyte Signaling Research Facility; the Weekend Intervention Program; an amphitheater lecture hall; and several medium-sized classrooms. It will soon also house back-office processing for Admissions, Financial Aid, the Bursar, the Registrar, and other offices in the Student Union as Raider Connect refocuses attention on student services.
Joseph Gibbons, Student Government President; Spencer Brannon, Student Government Chief of Staff; and Vicky Davidson, Associate Vice President for Facilities Planning and Development, have initiated a change of name for the central campus building.
“This is a building whose functions have changed, and it’s about time its name reflected those changes,” said Brannon about the misnomer before outlining Student Government’s plans to host a competition to rename it.
“Students are encouraged to send new name suggestions to Student Government,” Brannon said in front of a packed room of student leaders at last week’s House of Representatives meeting. He went on to say that from these, the top selections will be forwarded to a vote by the campus. The final name will need to be approved by the Board of Trustees.
“What better way is there to take pride in your school than by taking part in the renaming of a central building on campus,” asked Gibbons during the meeting.
University rules stipulate that the names of people cannot be used, and students should include their name with all suggestions. Submit suggestions or questions to e-board@wsusg.com no later than 7:00PM on September 8 for consideration.
