Student leaders attend Take Flight 2018

During the last weekend of July, 50 students and leaders from Wright State University attended the annual Take Flight leadership retreat.

This was the 12th year for the Take Flight which is a three day conference for students from organizations across campus to attend, collaborate and learn to be better leaders for tomorrow.

According to Melissa Guffey, Assistant Director for Office of Student Activities there were 61 organizations represented altogether.

Some of those that attended include WWSU-FM radio station, Rainbow Alliance, Student Government Association, TSOL, University Activities Board, Sorority and Fraternity Council, along with many others.

Out of the 50 attendees, 30 were first time participants in Take Flight.

This year the conference was held at Athletes in Action in Xenia, OH. Students took part in leadership presentations where six team leaders presented different key parts of being a successful leader.

Gina Keucher, Program Director for WSU Student Activities helped lead the retreat.

“I am so happy to have been a part of Take Flight since it was created in 2008,” said Keucher. “Each year leaders from diverse student groups gather together to learn more about their personal leadership, and to build relationships that lead to collaborative partnerships throughout the year. It is a strong learning opportunity and I am proud that Wright State continues to invest in the leadership experiences of our students.”

Matt Boaz, Chief Diversity Officer for WSU and other leaders led inclusion activities that opened the conversation for understanding privilege and diversity along with group orientated activities to build on teamwork.

At the end of the camp there was a talent show that offered students the opportunity to relax and have fun while showing off their talents. Some teams planned dance routines, individuals read poetry or sang songs, and played instruments.
