Student publishing book of poetry

As anyone can imagine, getting a book published can be a difficult job. Imagine doing it on your own! WSU’s Zachary Moore reflects on his experiences of doing so by saying, “It was a joy.”

Moore, a second- year grad student, has published his very own book of poetry titled “The Road” which features 49 poems including: “Rhythm in the Haze” and “Monet’s Painting.” The book’s title is based on the song “The Road” by Frank Turner. Moore gets most of his inspiration from many different areas including past experiences, travels, art history, surrealism, music and much more.

“When writing poetry, you can’t focus on one thing, or you’ll miss out on everything else,” Moore said.

According to Moore, the publishing process took about a year and was extremely difficult. Moore chose the path to publish his collection of poetry on his own because of the experience and he also wanted to learn more on formatting and drafting.

“Self-publishing is the way you have to go when being a poet,” Moore said.

Moore is in the Masters of Humanities Program and is also working on getting a certificate in museum studies. When not studying, Moore is busy being a UVC Creative Writing Instructor and mentions that teaching his classes has helped him revisit old ideas in his writing experiences. Moore mentions that his experiences at WSU have enriched his writing mainly because of the help of his past professors: Jimmy Cheshire, Gary Pacernick and Dr. David Garrison.

Moore has devoted the past year to publishing his book of poetry, but the poetry writing itself took much longer.

“As a writer, your work is never done,” Moore said.
