Title: Sultan’s of Swing: 100 years of baseball, jazz, and short fiction

The College of Liberal Arts will be hosting a two-day conference, commemorating the cultural influence that baseball, jazz, and fiction had on the American subconscious, on April 14 and 15.

This two-day event, which will be held in Schuster Hall of the Creative Arts Center starting at 5 pm. on Thursday and ending at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, will be open to the public. Students and faculty alike are encouraged to come and learn and experience the best of these three art forms.

This event is the brainchild of Scott Peterson, an assistant professor for the Department of Communication, and is part the on going Sultan’s of Swing series, which is hosted by Wright State’s Collaborative Education, Leadership, and Innovation in the Arts program.

This segment of the ongoing series will celebrate the 100-year anniversary of the publication of Ring Lardner’s You Know Me Al, which is recognized as the first literary baseball fiction. Key note speakers for this event will include Dr. Amber Roessner of the University of Tennessee, plenary speaker Dr. Roberta Newman of New York University, and award-winning sportswriter Hal McCoy of the Dayton Daily News.

This event will highlight the impact that these three art forms have had on shaping Americana, as well as propelling further appreciation for the true brilliance and talent behind some of the greatest players, artist, and musicians that helped propel these movements into important American subcultures.
