The D-Lab: promoting creation

The Jubilee Directing Lab Theater, known as the “D-Lab,” is a space for staging productions at Wright State that is entirely student run, unknown to most outside the Creative Arts Center (CAC).

According to Artistic Managing Director and acting major Layan Elwazani, the D-Lab is a space where “everything from full-fledged musicals to staged-readings of student works” has been produced.

Every production is free, made possible by a yearly fundraising event with a specific theme held in the D-Lab to raise funds for the upkeep of the space.

“We ask for a donation at the door,” said Elwazani. “It can be anything—a dollar, ten dollars.”

All productions in the D-Lab must be headed by a member of the theatre department, but any student can use the space. When asked about the low levels of promotion the D-Lab has outside of the CAC, Elwazani said that not much has been done because of the hectic schedule for theater majors.

“I hope to change that,” she said.

Managing Director in the Department of Theater, Dance and Motion Pictures Victoria Oleen mentioned the unique role the D-Lab plays for students.

“Not a lot of other facilities have a space like it,” Oleen said.

Elwazani said the D-Lab could offer special experiences to students.

“When people come together, regardless of their major, to create the works of art that we do [in the D-Lab] it really has an overall positive effect on everyone,” said Elwazani. “It’s really moving.”

During spring semester, the D-Lab will hold a festival showcasing new works by students. For more information, go to the “Jubilee Directing Lab” Facebook page.
