Toastmasters open house

Students who are looking to improve their public speaking and present skills for free should mark their calendars for the Toastmasters Open House event on April 15.

The goal of the Toastmasters is to help improve speaking and leadership skills of members from learn-by-doing workshops in which participants practice their skills in a no-pressure atmosphere. After attending the event, students should have a better understanding of skills such as engaging and connecting with their audience and overcoming nervousness anxiety among other things. Gary Mull, the Toastmasters International Director, will be the featured speaker. Gary is an accomplished professional speaker and is internationally known for his expertise on leadership and communication.

Abe Nemon and Lucas Burguea are both first-year Toastmaster members.

The Guardian: “How did this Toastmasters Open House event come about, and why is it important to Wright State students?”

Nemon: “Toastmasters will assist Wright State students in becoming better public speakers, practicing for any speeches you may have to give in class. Also it helps students practice for a situation outside of school such as a job interview or when being asked to speak about a certain subject. That’s partly why we do the Table Topics, which is impromptu speaking- you’re asked to speak on something you haven’t prepared for.”

Burguea: “We were having these meetings here and we realized we have a good number of members, but when you look around you notice half of these members are not students. We know that most students throughout a quarter will do at least 1, 2, or 3 presentations. We think it is important for students not only to be able to have these skills but to know we can practice them here together.”

The event will be held on Sunday, April 15th, in the Wright State University Student Union. The Social Reception will be from 3:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. and the Featured Presentation from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission is free, however seating is limited so reservations are appreciated.
