Universities statewide look to close ‘talent gap’

Recently Wright State announced its partnership with 13 other Ohio public universities in the Forward Ohio campaign to raise awareness of higher education in the state.

Forward Ohio was started by the Inter-University Council of Ohio (IUC) in order to close the increasing attainment gap in higher education.

“To accomplish this goal, the effort, called Forward Ohio, seeks to mobilize public support for enhanced investment in public higher education and ensure that it is a public policy imperative for state government,” stated in an IUC press release.

The attainment gap is also referred to as the talent gap, which according to IUC President Bruce Johnson is a looming crisis.

“Our ability to attract and retain jobs is the key to Ohio’s economic future and hinges to a large degree on the educational attainment levels of our citizens. In addition, higher education is the key to creating economic opportunity for Ohioans seeking to start a career or transition to a new career,” Johnson said.

Ohio has established a goal by 2025, 65 percent of working age adults will have a degree or other form of credential of value in the job market, to attain this goal however that would mean 1.3 million Ohioans will need to achieve postsecondary education by 2025.

Earlier in May, Wright State President Cheryl Schrader said in a campus wide email that encouraged the Raider community to visit the campaign website.

“You will find many interesting facts and figures that may surprise you, as well as compelling stories of personal growth, invention, creativity, and collaboration that may inspire you,” said Schrader.
