Womens basketball falls short in the comeback effort, loses 64-61

The Wright State womens basketball team lost a tough game at home to IUPUI, 64-61. It broke the Raiders six game winning streak and caused them to fall to third in the conference standings with a 6-2 record so far.

Wright State and IUPUI exchanged punches early, resulting in a 22-21 lead for WSU at the end of the first quarter. As the second quarter began, IUPUI’s Danielle Lawrence started to take over — she would finish the first half with 16 points on 7-10 shooting.

At halftime IUPUI led 39-33. They shot 54 percent from the field and held WSU to under 45 percent shooting. A big difference in the first half was IUPUI’s ability to out rebound the Raiders 18-11, this allowed IUPUI numerous chances at second chance points.

At the end of the third quarter it seemed IUPUI would run away with the game, as they led 53-42. However, the Raiders came roaring back in the fourth quarter to make it a competitive game. WSU was influenced heavily by Emily Vogelpohl’s 12 second half points.

In the end WSU would fall just short of the comeback. IUPUI would finish with three players scoring in double figures, including Lawrence’s 25 points. Vogelpohl led WSU in scoring with 16 points, and Chelsea Welch added 13 points and six rebounds.

WSU will be on the road for the next four games, starting at Cleveland State on Thursday, Jan 25.
