Every year, the sorority Alpha Xi Delta holds its Roller Disco event to raise money for its philanthropy, For Love of Children.

Event

From 10 p.m. on April 5 to 1 a.m. on April 6, the sorority rented out the Orbit Fun Center and sold tickets to attendees at only $10. They also offered raffle baskets, ranging from a movie night theme to fast food, including Raising Canes.

Lacey Hamrick, a junior elementary education major and vice president of philanthropy, goes into detail on how the event was organized and advertised.

“In the process of getting the event out on campus, we also did five tabling events leading up to the day of the [Roller Disco]. At the end of the event, there were a total of 150 guests who showed up to support FLOC and to have a fun night of skating and chances to win raffle baskets,” Hamrick said.

Students of Wright State University had a fun time listening to the specially-curated playlist as they skated around the rink, either in skates they brought or in skates provided by the Orbit Fun Center. Families came together to attend the event as well, which helped boost attendance count and support for the event.

For Love of Children

Alpha Xi Delta supports a variety of non-profit organizations that focus on helping children in need. These organizations include For Love of Children, as well as the sorority’s national philanthropy, the Kindly Hearts Initiative.

“[We] support two key impact organizations under the umbrella of Kindly Hearts Initiative, which are FosterClub and Standup for Kids, which all [of] these organizations focus on their mission statements of helping children in foster care and experiencing homelessness,” Hamrick said.

For their local charity, For Love of Children, the sorority does fundraisers like Roller Disco. Alpha Xi Delta members also volunteer at least once a month to do a variety of activities with children, according to Hamrick.

The mission statement of For Love of Children, according to their website, is “to serve over 6,000 children in the greater Dayton area who are neglected, abused, in foster care or who are in need of community resources. With twelve very proactive programs in place, we strive to better the lives of the children we are lucky enough to serve.”

Alpha Xi Delta is proud to support For Love of Children and volunteer for the organization whenever possible.

Should you join?

“I would have to say I would 100% recommend joining Greek life at [WSU], if it’s joining Alpha Xi Delta or another sorority or fraternity,” Hamrick said.

For those passionate about helping children in need—no matter their situation—Alpha Xi Delta is an excellent sorority to join for this interest.

The sorority holds this event each year, so be on the lookout for Roller Disco 2025.
