As winter flurries are in the air, here is a list of book recommendations to cozy up to from romance to horror and more. 

Fantasy/Sci-Fi

“Harry Potter” Series | J.K. Rowling

Take a trip down memory lane with the “Harry Potter” series, or read it for the first time. The seven-book series takes place in the magical wizarding world and follows three best friends navigating the realms of powers, school, evil forces and more. 

“House of Earth and Blood” & “House of Sky and Breath” | Sarah J. Maas

“House of Earth and Blood” is the first book in the Crescent City series that follows Bryce, whose family was murdered by demons. The second book of the series, “House of Sky and Breath,” follows the life of Bryce after Crescent City was saved. 

“How High We Go in the Dark” | Sequoia Nagamatsu

“How High We Go in the Dark” by Sequoia Nagamatsu is a sci-fi novel set in the future after an Artic plague reshapes the Earth. The book follows the story of the human spirit throughout different countries, centuries and celestial beings. 

Historical Fiction

“Violeta” | Isabel Allende

“Violeta” by Isabel Allende, told in the form of a letter, is a book that follows a woman born in 1920 South America to a family of sons. The book takes the readers on a journey through the life events of Violeta, including big events of the twentieth century like the Great Depression. 

“Mr. Dickens and His Carol” | Samantha Silva 

For a more holiday-themed book, try “Mr. Dickens and His Carol” by Samantha Silva. The story follows the main character, Charles Dickens, an author who is given an ultimatum to either write a Christmas book in a month or Dickens’ debts will be called in – which means the author could lose everything. 

Romance

“November 9” | Colleen Hoover

The internet has been blowing up over Colleen Hoover’s books, so try reading “November 9” or other books of Hoover’s to see what the hype is all about. 

“November 9” is about Fallon, who is set to move across the country that very day, and then Ben comes along. Ben is an aspiring novelist who uses Fallon’s life as inspiration, which one day confuses Fallon of Ben’s true intentions. Even though Ben and Fallon’s lives separate, the two get together every year on Nov. 9. 

“Book Lovers” | Emily Henry

“Book Lovers” by Emily Henry follows the main character, Nora’s, love life while on a sister’s trip away from being a literary agent in the city. During the trip, Nora’s life keeps being thrown into the same path as a broody editor from the city, Charlie. 

“One Day in December” | Josie Silver

Read “One Day in December” by Josie Silver to get in the holiday spirit. Laurie, the main character, has never believed in love at first sight, until one day it happens through a misty bus window on a snowy December day. 

Suspense & Horror

“The Murder of Roger Ackroyd” & “A.B.C. Murders” | Agatha Christie

Agatha Christie is a legend in the world of suspense-filled books. If you have not read any of Christie’s books yet, try starting with these two classics. 

“The Murder of Roger Ackroyd” starts out with Roger’s bride-to-be dying from an overdose of Veronal, and less than 24 hours later, Roger is murdered. 

“The A.B.C Murders” involves a murderer who leaves ABC Railway cards next to each victims’ body. Alice Asher died in Andover and Betty Bernard at Bexhill…the letters A and B. Who will be victim C? 

“Hidden Pictures” | Jason Rekulak

“Hidden Pictures” by Jason Rekulak is a supernatural thriller for the horror fans out there. Mallory takes a job babysitting Teddy, the son of a family with a lot of dark secrets. 

Self-Help

“Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear” | Elizabeth Gilbert

“Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear” by Elizabeth Gilbert is great for people looking for more creativity. Gilbert discusses the habits, attitudes and approaches needed to live a more curiously creative life. 

“Atomic Habits” | James Clear

“Atomic Habits” by James Clear dives into ways to change your habits from bad to good. A guide to easy and effective ways to build good habits and break bad ones. 

“The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck | Mark Manson

“The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck” by Mark Manson helps readers recognize what is worth caring about and how to adjust perspectives accordingly. Manson challenges the idea of everything being positive all the time and instead focuses on being honest that sometimes “sh*t is f*cked.”
