The Student Government Association unanimously passed Resolution 24-08, which presents a plan to build a student Recreation Center and a Career Services Center for Wright State University. With this, there is a potential fee that might be added to incoming students.

What it is

Logan Smith, Raj Soin College of Business senator for SGA, sponsored Resolution 24-08 with hopes to build a Recreation Center for WSU students. Specifically, Smith hopes to build a YMCA.

Smith explained that he believes that having a YMCA on campus would be beneficial for students for many reasons and also set WSU apart from other colleges.

Daniel Palmer, government affairs specialist and SGA advisor, has also been involved in the process of writing the resolution and creating the plans for what will be done.

“We would pretty much put all the student recreational fees or assisted recreational activities out front, and then we do a repurpose about 70,000 square foot studio dedicated to student activities. That’s the path we’re kind of leaning toward right now,” Palmer explained when introducing the resolution.

The resolution states that campus facilities like this can increase student retention and satisfaction.

SGA suspended Robert’s Rules of Order and unanimously passed the resolution at a recent meeting, meaning that all voting members agreed to all of its terms.

“The Student Government Association fully supports the expansion of these services and recommends the university convene a student advisory board to assist with student input as the project progresses,” the resolution says in its concluding statement.

The student fee

Smith explained the stipulations of a possible fee.

“The fee will not be added to any current student, if the fee gets added at all,” Smith said. “[Because] there’s the Wright State Guarantee, which is that your tuition and your cost are the same all four years, and so that wouldn’t change. I think that’s important.”

Smith also stressed that this fee might not be added to any incoming students either, as much of the actions of this resolution are still being determined; however, the most that would be added to any future students would be $200 per semester.

Actions being taken

Palmer said that the Board of Trustees plans to discuss the matter during the upcoming April 2024 meeting.

“The whole goal of everything [is to] improve the student life and to give students the best experience possible. That’s why we’re number three in the country for disability services because we want to bring the best service to every single student, and this will just improve service to all students as well, and so that’s the ultimate goal in the fee,” Smith said.

For more information about the resolution, students can visit the SGA website or attend the Board of Trustees meeting on April 26 at 9 a.m.
