“Carole and Tuesday:” Episode One Review

“Carole and Tuesday” is an anime centered around two girls who are musicians on a colonized Mars.

The first episode does a good job of establishing a tone for the series going forward. We also meet the titular characters, with Carole being an avid piano player and Tuesday playing the acoustic guitar.

The episode starts with Tuesday running away from the lavish lifestyle of her family and with her guitar along her back, she heads to the city.

It seems like she is on the prowl for purpose and a legacy to call her own.

In the midst of her travels, she meets the more outgoing Carole, who is getting by on temporary jobs and patient patrons willing to hear her play a few keys.

They instantly hit it off and begin to inquire about each other’s musical sensibilities before deciding to make music together. The show teases an interesting dynamic between the two lead characters in terms of their class differences.

Without going into further plot details, it is amazing how much this show tells the audience through its animation alone.

Of course, when Studio Bones is behind the wheel, no one should be surprised; the visuals are luscious and it feels like they were serenaded with time and energy.

The Mars of the show doesn’t resemble its real-life counterpart at all and that’s a good thing.

I have to mention too how incredible the score is here. The music matches the feel of the animation and provides warmth to the series; the soft tones of said score match the angst of Tuesday as she is trying to acclimate herself.

The score is almost entirely piano notes.

With the show also being set in the future, the technology put on display looks really cool, including Carole’s keyboard, which can also compact into a book bag.

She also rides a true hover-board and owns a robot owl that acts as her alarm clock and loyal companion.

“Carole and Tuesday” is comprised of two parts, 12 episodes each, with part one being available to stream on Netflix right now.

The second part is scheduled to release on Dec. 24.
