Opinion: I Like Valentine’s Day (And You Should Too)

Valentine’s Day is a day full of the celebration of love; however, many people only see the romantic side of the holiday and tend to shame it. In reality, Valentine’s Day is a day for all of us, no matter our relationship status, and there are many reasons why you should enjoy it.

Isn’t it just a holiday to sell candy?

At this point, every holiday is secretly a candy-selling scheme. Many single people use this as an excuse to dislike Valentine’s Day, despite the fact that every major holiday has its fair share of holiday-specific candies. There is always at least one aisle in every store filled to the brim with holiday candy, no matter what month it is.

Plus, Valentine’s Day candy is some of the best candy offered throughout the year. With its heart-shaped everything and hues of pink and red, it has the best aesthetic of all holiday candies.

Besides the looks, who can say no to bite-sized chocolates?

Why should I enjoy it if I am single?

Love is such an important aspect of our lives, and I am not talking about just romantic love. Platonic, familial and romantic feelings are all equally important. You probably love your pet as much—or even more than—you love your friends.

Valentine’s Day and the season surrounding it is a time for people to come together and remind each other of how much they love one another. You can do this with a partner, your friends or you could even plan something with your family. At the end of the day, it is all about celebrating how much you love the company of everyone in your life.

Plus, even if you are single, I would say that is even better than being with someone. Do not get me wrong, having that special someone to spoil on Valentine’s Day is as lovely as it sounds, but being single gives you more opportunities to celebrate with everyone in your life.

Instead of a whole day dedicated to one or two people, you can spend the holiday season expressing your love to everyone around you.

What can I do with my friends?

There is a lot to do with your friends, from special outings to stay-in hangouts.

Within the last few years, a tradition called “Galentine’s Day” has taken a spin on the traditional Valentine’s Day traditions, in which groups of friends will get together and plan events, such as picnics, baking hangouts, sleepovers and more, all with a pink or lovey-dovey theme about them.

If you are not up for events like that, there are many restaurants and entertainment places around the Dayton area, such as The Neon movie theater.

What can I do on campus?

During the week of Feb. 12, Wright State University is offering a plethora of events for students to enjoy with friends that are themed around Valentine’s Day. Most of these events are on Feb. 13 and 14, but students can check Engage for official event listings.

Of course, students can also plan coffee dates at Rey Rey Cafe or Pour and outdoor hangouts all around campus.

Valentine’s Day helps us remember to think of our loved ones and how much we love them, but even after the holiday is over, you should never forget to reach out and remind those around you of how much you enjoy their company.

Enjoy Valentine’s Day with whoever you wish whenever you wish, as long as you are having fun and staying happy during this love-filled season!
