Hath ignorance a place on the premises of an institution of higher learning? Simply put: no, it does not.
Then why do the satirically named “Quad Gods” persist in espousing their hateful message multiple times a week? The answer lies not in affirmation, but in acknowledgement.
Regardless of one’s theological philosophies, any arbitrary student who listens to these poor excuses for evangelists can tell that they haven’t a shred of credibility, nor do they have the compassion they claim to possess. Yet, these faux-preachers remain because many students regard their hate and their antagonization as entertainment.
While most disagree with the hate filled message that they espouse—which is evident from the general dissent of the mob-esque crowds that flock to shake their heads and throw in their two cents—the Quad Gods have a knack for effectively provoking the average Wright State student.
By acknowledging their mere presence and crowding around the heated arguments they provoke, we are encouraging them.
If opposed to the Quad Gods, then why continuously gather around them like a moth to a light?
For some students, the God-fearing message and the manner in which it expressed are so ludicrous that they find it humorous. For others, a good ol’ fashioned creationism debate provides a terrific outlet for bottled-up frustration.
How anyone, in my semi-unbiased opinion, can find these “dialogues” entertaining is beyond me. In fact, the way in which students respond to the Quad Gods is my biggest qualm with the overall demonstration. Before I even see the picket signs (“God Is Love” etc.), I hear the shouts and curses of students.
In these (usually angry) exchanges, no one accomplishes anything. Everyone eventually walks away, just as steadfast in their initial beliefs, and more often than not, more prejudice of the opposing view points.
If we are to eradicate the Quad Gods from Wright State, then we must ignore their silly sermons and let them wallow in their circular arguments. Nothing is accomplished by telling them how wrong or right they may be (other than an occasional condemnation to Hell). If Wright State is to remain a revered place of education and higher learning, we must let unfactual ignorance take care of itself—just as natural selection does to those unfit to survive. And certainly that type of hatred is unfit for Wright State.
