SGA Addresses Covid Vaccine and Outrageous Raider Mart Prices

Student Government Association Meeting Notes

SGA Meeting Notes | The Wright State Guardian

On Sept. 7 Wright State University’s (WSU) Student Government Association (SGA) met to appoint their new Director of Academic Affairs and discuss upcoming events.

SGA appoints new Director of Academic Affairs

SGA appointed Krista Long, a senior double majoring in political science and classics, as the new Director of Academic Affairs.

Long wants to ensure students have and know about resources to achieve their goals. She plans to speak with the Math and Writing Centers about what they offer and how they can help students.

“I love the fact that [SGA’s] an organization where you can make a real impact on campus. Student Government is an organization run by students, it’s not a faculty or administration. And so a lot of times, the faculty and the administration have their voice. So we’re trying to give a voice to the students,” Long said.

COVID vaccine mandate update

Currently, there are no plans to mandate the vaccine.

“It’s not that they will never do it as the situation is it always is, it’s very fluid,” SGA’s president, Jonathan Ciero, said.

According to Ciero, while WSU does not require the vaccine, the administration is looking for ways to educate people on it. They also want to provide the vaccine to more people and make students aware of its benefits.

Upcoming events and announcements

SGA advisor Courtney Laukitis announced that fall registration for Student Organization Registration & Training (SORT) organizations is open until Sept. 30. For students who want to create or bring back an inactive organization, registration is open until Oct. 15.

SGA also discussed several upcoming events.

One is the rescheduled Boogie on the Bricks event. It will be on Sept. 9 in the Quad at 9 p.m.

On Sept. 16 there will be a free concert at Levitt Pavillion. WSU students from the Jazz Band, Percussion Ensemble and Men’s Chorus from the School of Music will perform.

It will also feature a musical theatre selection from the Theatre Department.

Another upcoming event is homecoming which will take place the last week of September into October. Student organizations who want to participate in homecoming events can submit them on Engage.

Finally, Raider Nights in the City’s next event is the Cincinnati Reds game. It will be on Sept. 24 and transport to and from is provided.

Tickets cost WSU students, faculty and staff $20 while non-WSU student tickets cost $35.

Discussion on Raider Mart prices

Markus Perry, Director of the SGA Internship Program, opened a discussion on Raider Mart’s prices.

“At stores like Walmart and Meijer, a box of Pop-Tarts is $2.49, with a small margin within price. I go to Raider Mart and the same box of Pop-Tarts is $5.22,” Perry said.

However, currently, there are no plans for change at Raider Mart.

SGA meetings are open to the public. The next meeting will be 7 p.m. at Rathskeller in the Student Union.
