SGA and Election Problems

The Student Government Association met for their final meeting before swearing in the future members. This meeting was largely uneventful, with only general announcements being made, many regarding elections.

Elections, or the lack thereof

Voting was originally supposed to start on Saturday, April 6; however, as of the morning of April 11, voting outlets were still nowhere to be found. The voting eventually opened on April 11 at 3 p.m. Ryan Diaz, policy administrator for SGA and chair of the Special Elections Committee, blamed the lack of availability for voting on technology.

“Elections are currently ongoing. Unfortunately, we are having, I think, a technical issue with setting up voting, so I don’t know if that’s been opened yet,” Diaz said before April 11.

The lack of knowledge on this matter several days after voting was supposed to be opened is concerning, especially when elections are mainly the responsibility of the policy administrator and SEC.

“We extended voting until Tuesday right before the SGA meeting, and I’ll do a quick count and figure out so that [it] can be announced during next week’s SGA,” Diaz said.

Stephanie Buettner, current SGA president, explained further on Diaz’s behalf.

“The reason for having [voting] close before the SGA meeting is so we can swear in the next president and senators at that SGA meeting,” Buettner said.

Voting was originally supposed to end on April 12. With the late opening, voting will now be available until Tuesday, April 16, at 5 p.m. Students can vote here

“Make sure you guys know when that is eventually available and tell your friends to vote because it’s better to have an election with lots of participation,” Diaz announced at the end of the meeting.

The Rowdy Bobblehead Award

Hannah Davidson, College of Science and Math senator, passed the Rowdy Bobblehead Award to Vice President Aliesha Smith.

Davidson thanked Smith for all the hard work that she has been doing lately, and Smith said that she was appreciative of receiving the award.

SGA will meet again on Tuesday, April 16, at 8 p.m. in the Student Union Atlantis A/B room, where the new president, vice president and senators will be sworn in.
